On This Day: Fort Tryon Park Designated as a New York City Scenic Landmark – September 20, 1983

On September 20, 1983, the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission officially designated Fort Tryon Park as a Scenic Landmark, recognizing its exceptional design and historical significance.

This designation highlighted the park’s unique landscape architecture, which was originally designed by the Olmsted Brothers and funded by philanthropist John D. Rockefeller Jr. Following the landmark designation, a comprehensive plan was developed in 1984 to restore and enhance the park’s features, including the renowned Heather Garden.

Today, Fort Tryon Park stands as a testament to successful urban park preservation, offering New Yorkers and visitors alike a serene escape enriched with historical and cultural significance.
