On October 29, 2012, Hurricane Sandy struck New York City, causing significant damage to Fort Tryon Park. The storm uprooted and destroyed over 100 trees, including mature elms and oaks, and caused extensive damage to park infrastructure.
In the aftermath, the Fort Tryon Park Trust, in collaboration with NYC Parks, initiated a comprehensive recovery effort. This included the removal of fallen trees, restoration of pathways, and replanting of vegetation. Volunteers played a crucial role, contributing over 550 hours to clear debris and restore the park’s beauty.
The storm also caused the historic flagpole on the Linden Terrace to topple. The Fort Tryon Park Trust funded the repair of this flagpole, ensuring the park’s historical features were preserved.
Today, Fort Tryon Park stands resilient, a testament to the community’s dedication and the ongoing efforts of the Fort Tryon Park Trust to maintain and enhance this cherished green space.
