RECAP: Mayor Mamdani at Fort Tryon Park

Hundreds Gather in Fort Tryon Park for NYRR 2K for 2-K with Mayor Zohran Mamdani

On a beautiful Sunday morning in Fort Tryon Park, hundreds of New Yorkers came together for the New York Road Runners (NYRR) 2K for 2-K event, celebrating New York City’s first-ever 2-K program and encouraging families to apply before the June 26 enrollment deadline.

Hosted by Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani and New York Road Runners, the nonprofit that “runs” New York City, the family-friendly event featured a fun run through the park, bringing together children, parents, educators, and community leaders in support of expanded access to early childhood education.

Mayor Mamdani highlighted the significance of the new initiative, which provides free, full-day, full-year care and education for two-year-olds across New York City.

“New York City’s two-year-olds are the real winners of today’s race, because applications are now open for families to access free, full-day, full-year 2-K,” said Mayor Mamdani. “For too long, working families have had to run circles to navigate impossible costs and endless waitlists just to find child care. We’re changing that. With 2-K, families can rest assured that their kids will get the running start they deserve.”

The event also welcomed Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal and State Senator Robert Jackson, who joined families and community members in promoting the importance of accessible early childhood education.

Fort Tryon Park was proud to serve as the setting for this citywide celebration, welcoming families from across the five boroughs to enjoy a morning dedicated to health, community, and opportunity!
