Celebrating Frederick Law Olmsted’s 203rd Birthday at Fort Tryon Park

Saturday April 26 was Olmsted Day, when the nation celebrates the birthday of Frederick Law Olmsted — the visionary widely regarded as the father of American landscape architecture!  Olmsted’s profound belief in the healing power of green spaces for people and society revolutionized urban life, creating parks like Central Park and Prospect Park, that continue to nourish both the body and spirit.

His legacy lives on at Fort Tryon Park, where the Olmsted Brothers — his sons and professional heirs — transformed rocky, hillside landscape into the magnificent park we cherish today. Their thoughtful design preserved natural beauty while offering sweeping promenades, terraced gardens, and breathtaking views of the Hudson River.

In honor of Olmsted’s enduring influence, we invite you to join us for a special rain date event Fort Tryon Park Trust created — an Olmsted Day Historic Walking Tour on Saturday, May 3 at 2 PM with local historian Robin Boomer. Discover how the Olmsted family’s vision shaped Fort Tryon Park, and experience firsthand the lasting impact of a man whose groundbreaking designs set the standard for public spaces that offer beauty, respite, and community connection.
