SUMMARY:On this Day: Park Dedication
DESCRIPTION:On This Day: Fort Tryon Park Dedicated – October 12\, 1935 \nOn October 12\, 1935\, Fort Tryon Park was officially dedicated to the public in a ceremony attended by philanthropist John D. Rockefeller Jr. and New York City Parks Commissioner Robert Moses. Rockefeller\, who had gifted the land to the city in 1931\, played a pivotal role in the park’s creation\, funding its development and commissioning the Olmsted Brothers to design the landscape. \nThe dedication marked the transformation of a once-private estate into a public haven\, offering New Yorkers access to beautifully designed gardens\, rolling lawns\, and scenic vistas overlooking the Hudson River. In his dedication speech\, Rockefeller emphasized the importance of preserving such spaces for public enjoyment and the enrichment of urban life. \nToday\, Fort Tryon Park remains a cherished green space in Upper Manhattan\, providing visitors with a tranquil retreat and a glimpse into the city’s rich history.

SUMMARY:On this Day: Hurricane Sandy
DESCRIPTION:On October 29\, 2012\, Hurricane Sandy struck New York City\, causing significant damage to Fort Tryon Park. The storm uprooted and destroyed over 100 trees\, including mature elms and oaks\, and caused extensive damage to park infrastructure. \nIn the aftermath\, the Fort Tryon Park Trust\, in collaboration with NYC Parks\, initiated a comprehensive recovery effort. This included the removal of fallen trees\, restoration of pathways\, and replanting of vegetation. Volunteers played a crucial role\, contributing over 550 hours to clear debris and restore the park’s beauty. \nThe storm also caused the historic flagpole on the Linden Terrace to topple. The Fort Tryon Park Trust funded the repair of this flagpole\, ensuring the park’s historical features were preserved. \nToday\, Fort Tryon Park stands resilient\, a testament to the community’s dedication and the ongoing efforts of the Fort Tryon Park Trust to maintain and enhance this cherished green space.

SUMMARY:On this Day: Margaret Corbin's Birthday
DESCRIPTION:On this Day: Margaret Corbin’s Birthday – November 12\, 1751 \nMargaret Cochran Corbin was born on November 12\, 1751\, in Franklin County\, Pennsylvania. \nOrphaned at the age of five after her father was killed in an Indian raid and her mother was captured\, Margaret faced hardships early in life. In 1772\, she married John Corbin\, a farmer from Virginia\, and in 1776\, when John enlisted in the Pennsylvania artillery during the American Revolutionary War\, Margaret accompanied him to the front lines. \nAfter John was killed in battle\, Margaret bravely took over his position manning a cannon\, earning the nickname “Captain Molly.” Her heroic actions led to a pension from the U.S. government\, recognizing her service as one of the first women to serve in combat. Margaret passed away on January 16\, 1800\, in Highland Falls\, New York\, and her legacy endures as a symbol of courage and patriotism in American history.
