SUMMARY:Artist Talk with Zaq Landsberg
DESCRIPTION:Zaq is the recipient of the 2020 Clare Weiss Emerging Artist Award for “Tomb Effigy of Margaret Corbin” on view in Fort Tryon Park through June 18\, 2022. \nLandsberg’s public artwork pays tribute to Revolutionary War hero Margaret Corbin (1751–1800)\, considered the first woman to fight for America\, and namesake of several Fort Tryon Park features. Corbin took control of her fallen husband’s cannon and fought during the Battle of Fort Washington at this site in 1776. The artwork takes the form of the tomb effigies at The Met Cloisters\, figuratively and aesthetically stitching together the Revolutionary War battlefield and the ahistorical\, relocated medieval French abbeys that comprise the Cloisters. In addition to paying homage to a lesser-known female historical figure\, Landsberg’s sculpture contributes to the contemporary conversation around representation in monuments and public commemoration. \nThis program is presented in partnership with the Fort Tryon Park Trust. \nThe Clare Weiss Emerging Artist Award is granted to one emerging artist who submits the most compelling proposal for an outdoor sculpture in a New York City park. The grantee receives an award of $10\,000 to create their proposed artwork. This award was made possible with support from Janet and John Koehne.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Fort Tryon Park Trust and Inwood Art Works for a “meet the artist” guided podcast tour of episodes 10-12 of the 12-part Mendelssohn on the Hudson production. \nThis musical and historical tour follows the footsteps of the German Jews and others who fled 1930s Nazi Germany to settle in Washington Heights\, also referred to at the time as “Frankfurt on the Hudson.” Visitors will hear episodes with songs based on true field-collected stories from neighborhood residents set to Felix Mendelssohn’s Songs without Words and featuring neighborhood landmarks like those in Fort Tryon Park. \nMeet the artist and start the tour at Heather Garden’s Margaret Corbin Circle entrance at 3:00 p.m. Each podcast is five minutes in length and the artist will lead attendees on the three episodes that center on Fort Tryon Park. Each night\, we will be closing Fort Tryon Park’s roadways to cars from 6:00 – 11:00 p.m. to give everyone more room! Pack a picnic supper\, your scooter\, sidewalk chalk\, and a blanket\, and get ready for some car-free summer fun!

DESCRIPTION:TONIGHT IS CANCELED! We are sorry to report that all of the JULY 7 WONDERFUL WEDNESDAY activities\, including the movie\, music\, and yoga are CANCELED due to weather. Given last night’s storm damage and its after-effects of hanging limbs\, the National Weather Service’s Heat Advisory through 8:00 p.m.\, and the chance of severe thunderstorms\, tonight’s events will need to be rescheduled. Our priority is keeping our park community safe. Fort Tryon Park’s roads will remain open to vehicular traffic to allow for emergency access given felled trees and storm predictions. Stay tuned for details about the new date of the the music and movie and please stay safe!\n\n  \nThe Fort Tryon Park Trust and NYC Parks are launching “Wonderful Wednesdays” which take place on the first Wednesday of each summer month (7/7\, 8/4\, 9/1). The park’s roads will close to cars from 6 – 11 p.m. on these three nights! Pack a picnic\, your blanket\, sidewalk chalk\, and tricycle or bicycle to spend a car-free sunset in the park. \nTo kick off Wonderful Wednesdays on July 7\, the Fort Tryon Park Trust will present a free movie screening of The Wizard of Oz with a pre-show concert by the Venzal Combo on Cloisters Lawn.
