DESCRIPTION:Visitors to Upper Manhattan’s Fort Tryon Park this May through September will be welcomed by ARMORS\, a site-specific public art project on the park’s Cloisters Lawn for which Icelandic artist Steinunn Thorarinsdottir has positioned each of three androgynous figures in humanlike dialogue with a suit of armor that was cast from a custom 3D scan of a carefully chosen suit of armor from The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s permanent collection. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe project’s incorporation of armor—a form that is both distinctly iconographic and foreign to the artist’s own hand—marks an aesthetic and conceptual divergence for Icelandic Thorarinsdottir\, who in her home country is a celebrated pioneer (the first female sculptor to have two solo shows at the Reykjavik Art Museum\, 1982 and 1987) whose androgynous figure installations have since 1976 been mounted in dozens of prominent sites around Reykjavik and beyond.

SUMMARY:10th Annual Stan Michels Memorial Jazz Concert
DESCRIPTION:Join the Fort Tryon Park Trust\, NYC Parks\, and the Michels family in honoring the late Council Member Stan Michels at the tenth annual Memorial Jazz Concert. Enjoy live jazz by local impresario Marjorie Eliot and her ensemble underneath the majestic elms on the promenade\, alongside the beautiful Heather Garden and overlooking the Hudson River. \nStan Michels represented Northern Manhattan in the City Council for 24 years from 1978 through 2001. He was chair of the Committee on Environmental Protection\, and his legislative record was notable for his work fighting on behalf of tenants for the expansion of the city’s recycling program\, for the protection of our water supply and cleaner air\, and against childhood lead poisoning\, smoking in public places\, and unreasonable noise. He was also a steadfast advocate for parks\, allocating over $50 million for park improvements in Washington Heights\, Inwood\, and Harlem\, including virtually every playground in his district. \nThe promenade where this concert is being held was named in his honor shortly before he passed away on August 1\, 2008. \nWe hope you can be with us to remember Stan on the tenth anniversary of his passing. \nThis program will be accessible to people with disabilities. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n*In the event of rain\, this event will be held at OSA/Cornerstone Center at 178 Bennett Avenue at 189th Street.
